Deployable Structures

Shape memory materials are ideal for compact, lightweight deployment systems in spacecraft:

• Antenna and Boom Deployment: SMAs are used to unfurl antennas or extend booms once in orbit. They are compact during launch and activated (e.g. by heat) to expand.
• Stowed-to-Deployed Transitions: For CubeSats and small satellites, SMPs or SMAs offer low-mass options to transition from launch configuration to operational mode

Micro-Actuation Systems

• Especially in micro-satellites and instruments, SMAs provide precise actuation in tight spaces without traditional mechanical parts.
• Radiation Shutters: SMAs actuate shutters for protecting sensitive sensors or optics from solar or cosmic radiation.

Adaptive and Morphing Components

• Reconfigurable Surfaces: For satellites or probes that need to change orientation or functional surfaces mid-mission (e.g., for shielding or data collection), SMAs are used to reconfigure external panels.

Docking and Release Mechanisms

• Latching and Unlatching Devices: SMA-based latches are used for satellite deployment mechanisms from launch vehicles.
• Connector Release Systems: SMPs have been explored for use in plug-and-release systems where components must disconnect after reaching space
